Kéré Architecture's redesigned Chalet in Gstaad featured on the Cover of Architectural Digest US

press · December, 04th 2024

The January issue of Architectural Digest US features an extraordinary chalet redesign in Gstaad, led by Francis Kéré. In the cover story, AD's global features editor Sam Cochran takes readers on a tour of this reimagined Swiss Alps retreat, highlighting Kéré Architecture’s ability to blend cultural authenticity with innovative design.

Designed with Chaletbau Matti, the chalets integrate traditional alpine exteriors with innovative interiors. Key themes, Regenerate, Think, and Play, define the spaces. The Regenerate area features an indoor-outdoor pool under a striking canopy of bamboo poles by Francis Kéré, evoking the cosmos. The Play zone includes a discotheque, bowling alley, and sculptures, created with input from Studio Karhard and African artisans. The Think forum centers on a circular hearth inspired by storytelling traditions, while a baobab-inspired staircase symbolizes wisdom.

Collaborators include Muza Lab, Hervé Descottes, Sara Zewde, and artists like Ini Archibong, Esther Mahlangu, and Rashid Johnson. Future plans include an artist residency to further creativity and exchange.
