The Schorge Chair is a product of one of Kéré Architecture’s creative pillars: sustainability. The basis of its design is craftsmanship and ingenuity. It was developed directly on the Lycée Schorge Secondary School construction site in Koudougou, Burkina Faso.
It makes use of leftover construction materials, which were upcycled to create the chair’s components: rebars from the roof structure became the legs and frame of the chair, while hardwood used for the concrete form became the seat and backrest. In this way, materials that are usually wasted found a new life as classroom seating in the school.
In 2016 the Schorge Chair was included in the exhibition Francis Kéré. Radically Simple at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. Two years later, it served as part of Kéré Architecture’s retrospective Francis Kéré. Primary Elements at Madrid’s Museo ICO.
